What else could be the reason ?

cacti and succulent burn from fresh growth either if the weather turns harsh too early in that case move the plant away from burning sun in a partial sun position, sun scald is very common on round barrel type cacti... the other reason can be that when the growing season starts in March nutrients have not been given to plants which result in poor and retarded growth feed all your plants with nitrogen less fert and water regularly in the evening.

Tahir Sb: Thanks for the prompt response. You have a point. The weather in Karachi is pretty harsh but this particular plant has remained in partial shade for a fairly long time. When you talk of nitrogenless fertilizer, could you please let me know what it should be. I am aware of fertilisers with very low "N" number but totally nitrogenless is new for me. Would appreciate further guidance.

Talking of fertiliser what is your take on well rotted cow manure and also "Ojhri Ki Khad". The latter is pretty rich in nitrogen.

Tahir Sb: I have one more query. In the previous years, this plant regularly produced offsets and I was able to pot them seperately and pass them on to friends. Now for the past 2/3 3 this process has stopped completely. What could be the reason for this?

Nitrogen less ferts are not easy to get hands on, for that reason i use DAP fertilizer during growing season which is less in nitrogen and high in phosphate and when the plants begin to bloom i switch to potassium fertilizer mainly potassium sulphate.

However in Karachi i came to know that there are vendors that carry special cactus fertilizer i dont remember the name but will update you when i find it.

Reasons can be numerous like retarded growth, heat strain.... another reason that a plant ceases to put offsets is if the stem of the plant which is close to the ground has hardened and turned woody.... offsets are mainly produced on soft fleshy semi - hard nodules of a plant stem, try to re-pot and bury the plant a bit deeper into the soil by taking off the lower leaves of the agave plant this might do the trick.

Another thing in my mind is if there is a root rot? check your plant roots.

I was thinking in terms of repotting. However, presently the weather is quite harsh. Do you think it advisible?

A always wonder why such a wonderful plant is neglected so much except by the common house sparrow who love to devor its flowers. I plan to start collecting them but only the pretty ones.

Arif Sb: If you look once more at the picture of the orange colored canna flower, you will notice some tiny leaves and even tinier flowers. This is Lawsonia inermis also known as hina or henna and ofcourse "mehndi". I had this bush for years and years and this is the first time I have seen it flower!

This is the right time to transplant cacti and succulents because they tend to rot out in monsoon.

oh what wonderful leaves on these canas mine was plain green leaves but the flowers are dual colour orange and red in one , grows everywhere ive planted it and very happily multiplies !!

If you have a space it has a place in your garden I think it is more fragrant than Molsari.
