No. Papilio is a registered Hippeastrum.

The odd thing about H. Papilio is that a newly purchased bulb tends to flower in the first year but may choose never to flower for years. After a hiatus of 7-12 years may start flowering on a consistent basis. This behaviour is only associated with H. Papilio.

H. Papilio in Waheed Sahib's collection was originally in someone's collection who purchased it in the early 70's and the bulb refused to flower for more than a decade. This eventually came in Waheed Sahib's possession and didn't flower for another 7-8 years and then started blooming consistently annually.

I had 3 bulbs of H. Papilio which bloomed in the first year back in 2007 and then never flowered.

Food for thought. Any reasoning for this phenomenon?

Very interesting phenomenon. Is this behaviour universal or a specific case in our country?

Waheed sahibs papillio never bloomed so we emptied the pot. It was full of babies right down to the bottom. they were separated and since then he is having regular blooms perhaps from different plants.
Papillio produces lots of babies and the seeds that I got did not germinate.
I have 8 mature bulbs one of the bulbs had 16 babies around it, in Lahore climate it is ever green, perhaps it is not threatened so it does not care to bloom. ANY WAY NOT EVERY BULB blooms every year.

Brig Sahib,
True that H. Papilio tends to proliferate quickly. Malik Sahib has 2 - 3 pots in which one of the pots is filled with bulblets which also tends to flower consistently similar to the picture shown above you. H. Papilio belonging to another friend of mine also hasn't flower in 15 years and i believe this behaviour is experienced universally. The reason might be a problem with the hybridisation of H. Papilio in Holland but i am not sure.

Papillio is species and not a hybrid. The behaviour may vary according to place of origin.
