Re: Suggestions for Living fence
Interesting. Number of questions come to my mind.
A living fence to keep out two legged or four legged animals? (to select the plant)
How big is the farm? The length of the fence? (to determine the number of plants required).
Irrigation?(until the maturity)
Practicability?(husbandry required)
Lets think about it.
Arif

Arif Sahib,
Thank you for the response.
[quote="Muhammad Arif Khan"]Interesting. Number of questions come to my mind.

Principally 4 legged. However since the farm is planned as an orchard, 2 legged is also relevant.
.......How big is the farm? The length of the fence? (to determine the number of plants required).
Total perimeter is 1100 feet.
.....Irrigation?(until the maturity)
Right now ; none which means it is barani. However some arrangement will have to be made.
Practicability?(husbandry required)
Please expand on this. I would think at the stage of young plants not much husbandry is required apart from irrigation and fertilizer. When mature some trimming would certainly be needed.

Re: Suggestions for Living fence
Haque Sahib,
What I gather is you wish to develop an orchard of around two acre, probably at your village, having no irrigation system.
I am an old man and so a blunt man, I SAY FORGET IT.
It is too small for a commercial orchard.
Fruit trees require a lot of regular watering until established, sinking a tube well even if feasible, the cost would not be worth the ultimate yield.
If it is not an orchard area midst other orchards, every child and even adults would like to pick some fruit and....you wont want it.
Living Fence;
BARI leaves is the most liked food of goats they will love it.
Its development will require more plants and care than the fruit trees.
By the way which fruit orchard you had in mind?
Arif

Re: Suggestions for Living fence
Arif Sb,
Assalam o ALAIKUM.
This would be a retirement home- not a commercial venture, something to do after retiring. The orchard will have principally olives, figs and grapes and some red blood.
It is not an orchard area. But as I am sure you know, olives are bitter if eaten off the tree. So that will keep the temptations at bay. Figs - not many people would understand what that is. Grapes yes, will need some guard dogs.
I am planning Seabuck Thorn, bairee and Khattian (citrus but very bitter and lots of thorns). The latter two are extensively used as live fences. Seabuck Thorn would be an experiment.

Re: Suggestions for Living fence
Haque Sb.,
I have a farm too near Islamabad and slowly developing the fence on somewhat similar lines as you have planned. However I would rather call it an edible cum mixed fence. Front one left side of Main gate is (apprx 200feet long) is Uforbia as first line (Thorny and flowers). Next line is of Kaner to have a privacy. In between is Motia. The right side of gate is also about 200+ feet. The fence here in order of plants is composed of : Karonda plants, then Pyracanthra (Firethorn), and then Mardan Roses and other roses till end. This side requires more security so all are thorny bushes with berries and flowers. karonda we use a lot in "Zarda" and :Murrabba".
Apart from frontside, we have one left side and right side and also then the back side. I have started planting Lemons of all kinds (Kathis, chinease, Lisbon, Eureka etc ) on left side as it is almost 600 feet long fence. So far managed to complete 200 feet. Raising this fence upto a six feet height where then I will trim from top but would let grow outwards in my land and other side too for fruiting.
So far I have been successful in this kind of fencing and feel happy too to see results. However it will take some time when I get 100% protection & privacy.
I hope my experiment with this fence may help you. I have though one question to ask you, and that is, from where you plan to get Sea buck thorn. This bush has very good medicinal value, but as far as I know, mostly grown in Kashmir. Some researcher in NARC has tried in Islamabad but so far no success perhaps.
regards and best of luck with your living fence.

Nothing much to add to Yawers suggestion but all this would require your presence.

Re: Suggestions for Living fence
What Arif sb has suggested would be required and as a matter of fact I could not have made a fence without two most important aspects which Arif sb has suggested.
1. Presence (I visit once a week and have kept a farm hander there)
2. Watering arrangement (Have managed to have a bore, and solar pump).
