Re: Project Spring 2014
In my little experience no seed starting container can match the goodness of ground. Good drainage, good water retention, ability to stand full sun and so on, however two lean aspects are seeds getting lost in hard crust and damping off due fungus. Now one way is to replace at-least 2 inch top soil with good sowing media or we can innovate a little by making small plugs in soil, filled with material such as compost or peat moss. This way we can save on media.
Soil is raked fine with peat moss plugs.

Hollyhock seeds are quite hardy and will germinate in any ordinary garden soil.

Nice idea to use news paper for germination. Good progress of Freesia and Coral dorps.
Farhan sb did you use the clear plastic sheet to cover the seed pot till the start of germination or let them as it without covering?

No yet, later as watering requirement these days is higher, i am not sure if once watering and covering with plastic would suffice

Re: Project Spring 2014
me tried two pots marry gold inca last week. seed germination success was about 80%. Seeds germinated within three days without need of any additional water. Today sowed four more pots of frech marry gold and covered again. Hoping for good germination?

The Fable Begins
Today,Autumnal equinoxes marks the very first day of fall as well as the beginning of an arduous journey. Can a tale be glorious without quagmire......No, adversity brings glory. Dark clouds, blazing winds, sight of a pest and a struggling sprout.
Reminiscing past, today i felt it was way less romantic and less melodramatic. But Be-hold it all came right at the beginning. Loving it, it is as it used to be....
Cold breeze & rain drops signals the last of summer. Seeds can go in now....

Re: Project Spring 2014
very nice idea , making plug holes in ground to save sowing media , but newly emerged seedling might be knocked off by cats or some other insects
