Roots are clumsy but dont go too deep.12'' for a year old plant is ok.I have planted some double fans in pots as well. 18'' pots for 2 year old plants / clumps but obviously, ground is better.Izhar wrote:extensive root system, well suited for ground rather then pots...

Adnan, do check your poted daylilies (if any) after 2 months and you will understand the extensiveness of the roots... they literally form a mass which is as hard as a tennis ball... so bigger the space, better the root system leading to a better overall plant..
Re: My daylilies
just wondering if you cut the blooms and put them in a vase how long do they last ? and does the plant produce more blooms ? and is it a multi blooming plant or just one bloom at a time ?

Re: My daylilies
Daylily means a lily a day.Flowers will open with sun and say gudbye with it.Flowers will last only one day in a vase but as per my knowledge, if you pick a spike that has 3buds and a flower, you'll have flowers in ur vase everyday. One will go the other flower will follow.I started this experiment just today. Will update you with the results soon.sara wrote:just wondering if you cut the blooms and put them in a vase how long do they last ? and does the plant produce more blooms ? and is it a multi blooming plant or just one bloom at a time ?
Hybrid daylilies produce 20-45 buds normally on a spike with a few exceptions producing upto 60+ buds.A single fan will bear one spike but when a plant matures and it forms a clump (after a year from single fan usually) it'll produce multiple spikes at the same time resulting in mass blooming.
Mostly, daylilies are rebloomer which means they'll bloom again once they are finished blooming with their first spike.Once the spike (just recalled, it's called scape) is removed other one will follow with an interval bw the two.
There are a few multi bloomer varieties as well which keep blooming from April/May to September.I have those comming next month.

Re: My daylilies
May be you are right because when they were sent to me they didn't have massive root systems.Although they had clumsy roots but they were not big enough not to be contained in a 12'' pot.May be they cut some of the roots. Will take pix next month with my upcomming bareroot daylilies.I'll only be digging these out when I sell them awayIzhar wrote:Adnan, do check your poted daylilies (if any) after 2 months and you will understand the extensiveness of the roots... they literally form a mass which is as hard as a tennis ball... so bigger the space, better the root system leading to a better overall plant..

Re: My daylilies
Lots of rain today so daylilies are not much happy as well as all other plants in my garden.6inches of water.
1) Tag lost so dont know if it's registered or un registered.I've seen this one flowering more gracefully but when it's raining for the past 3 days , you shud be happy if it flowers like this with less ruffled edges.

Re: My daylilies
Wow, now this is something diffrent.Flower is around 10-11 cm.Scape is not too high.Lots n lots of buds.I belive this one is going to be a beauty when it forms a clump. This is the smallest flowering of all my daylilies but indications are that it'll be massive bud forming machine when well established.Very cute.Unregistered.
