Thank you Izhar ... that hands-on knowledge of suckers came from my elder brother who was a rose fan and made me remove the rose suckers at times during my school days :-). Unfortunately, my rose grafting experiments never succeeded but his did. So grafting is an art too!

This is the right time to prune roses at Islamabad.hard prune if your bushes are more than 1 year.if they are planted in last spring don,t prune.if age is more than 1 year hard prune.mix well rotted old cow manure in to the bed.after a week when the bed is dry enough feed with NPK granular & water.
The bushes are in flowering but don,t hesitate & hard prune to get quality blooms in spring.

Prune hard like this M.S. bush.

your result should like this Sharifa Asma full double flowers with plenty of petal count plus clean & neat dark green foliage.its good if you feed your bushes with rose food available with local seeds stores(if you have limited bushes)

look at the clear neat foliage.enjoy your roses.

There is no rule per se but avoid over watering, when the top soil is about just moist (or about to dry), you can sprinkle more water. No need to fill up pots every time. Since it is cold, so rate of evaporation will be lower. You have to observe it yourself to develop water feeding frequency for your garden.

If you wish to buy roses, buy it from Shalimar- excellent quality than the rest-slightly more expensive it sasta baar baar rulaye aur mehnga ek baar. Nobody sells jangli gulab (which I said is typically used for root stock). The desi rose has fragrant red flowers. Ask nurserymen and they will help you.

I would differ a bit .. Just "spraying" water on roses in the summers midday imo helps the plants cool down in the intense summer sun. The roses do respond to it. I've read everywhere how it causes fungus blah blah blah. And it does BUT the water dries up within a few minutes and no damage is done. I started this when I went to many nurseries (especially those outiside KU) who had blooming roses throughout the year! And they would overhead water too. Maybe i'm illogical but it works for me atleast. I read somewhere somebody posted, "The leaves are meant to get wet, its just nature's way of doing stuff. What would you do if it rains? Go stand over the roses with an umbrella?"

I've not had any fungal problem in 2 years. Reason is, good vigilance. Always check new nursery plants of disease before introducing them, and if a plant does develop symptoms, deal with it even then and there rather than procrastinating!
