Lillium require chilling in refrigerator from May till September. Temperature in refrigerator should be around 5'C. Chilled bulbs planted in October bloom at-least 3 weeks before the ones grown in ground. If left in the ground they tend to sprout in the 1st week of May and the bloom time is cut short by rising temperatures. Plus the tendency to rot if left in ground is greater especially during the monsoon season. Easter lilies also require chilling.
