Re: spring 2014.
i think pansy is a large flower while viola is small.so pansy being a big flower takes a lot of energy to make that huge pansy blooms so you don't get as many per plant as you do with the smaller-flowered Violas.
for more information i will request pansy expert umar khan sb for details.

Re: spring 2014.
Rafique hi dear.Pansy is a common name given to large flowering Viola group. First garden Pansy was derived from the wild Viola Tricolor & then recrossed with other Viola species. So now whenever you see Pansy on the page you will also see Viola x Wittrokiana.
Pansy takes many energy to get the large blooms so the blooms per plants are lesser as compared to Violas. Its not only in this annual.Just have a look on Petunia. The Grandifloras have larger but lesser blooms compared to Multiflora groups.
Another thing large flowered varieties face are the rains.Thats why in Western gardens you will see clear cut they prefer the small flowered annuals in open beds.

Re: spring 2014.
When one starts anew, it means tremendous opportunities, ideas and what not. Take your time, take every thing into consideration such as exposures, bed design and borders, water drainage and passages in case of excess rain, water mechanism in which you would be comfortable to water your plants without least effort and disturbing your plants. You can look into raised beds, permanent trellises for vines and creepers, most importantly every nook and corner of a bed should be accessible, like your mesmbry bed, some part of it would not be assessable to you, in case it was some other plant which require tending, you would not have access, Plan a sitting area, make a nursery portion with some shade where sick plants, new borns etc can go. Re-locaiton of shrubs, pruning of bushes all factors should be looked into, addition of better draining media(i think your soily is clayee), tree litter, look into ways in which you can reduce in much, or else you would require frequent cleaning of beds. In between beds, what do you plan, ideas like bricks, marble blocks or chips.....its so exciting when you start from scratch.
Decisions you make now will have long time repercussions.
