Re: Amaryllis
Yes I thought it interesting too that they should bloom right away. I brought them from the US after Umar Khans advice. there are some who sent up leaves first and some who sent up flower shoots first. I read that they have about a 7 week blooming period in spring. My guess they'll bloom again next year in spring and these will send up the flowers as they sprout this fall and winter. The plus now is that due to cooler weather the flowers will be longer lasting.

Re: Amaryllis
wow, very pretty, remember not to over water them infact never water them untill they r completely dry , bcoz amaryllis needs vry less water, they r drought tolerant bulbs, over watering will make ur bulbs soft and eventully they rot.

Re: Amaryllis
These bulbs are specialy prepared for blooming in X Mas. You could have delayed their blooming by keeping them chilled.
Do not expect re- bloom this spring, now they will bloom in April 2013
Here is one of my post from Hippeastrum Forum.
Hello every one,
As I have mentioned before, my problem is a very short lived spring. By the time my amaryllis are ready to bloom it is so hot that a flower lasts only for three days. So I have been madly trying to get them to bloom in February. I have tried all tricks mentioned in this forum and Amaryllis Study Group.
ExperimentNo.1 A lady in Florida pulls out bulbs any time of the year, lets them dry in the lawn roots towards sun for two weeks. Replants and gets blooms after six weeks.
I did the same with about 100 bulbs and lost about 50% and few out of remaining bloomed, that too at normal time.
Experiment No. 2, Hot water treatment used only eight bulbs. Thank God none has died, they have started sprouting leaves but there is no trace of a scape yet.
Experiment No. 3, Forcing by chilling in refrigerator. Fifty bulbs were used, replanted in 1st week of Jan. for bloom in mid Feb. I lost six, two are in bloom NOW, the remaining are growing leaves.
No more experiments for me, let them bloom when they want to.
This year I will concentrate upon improving my stock by selective breeding and organising my existing stock.

Re: Amaryllis
Thanks Brig saheb. I don't think I have the courage to try the experiments yuo did; but then I dont have a huge stock of bulbs like you. I guess I'll settle for the short lived blooms. Right now the blooms are lasting well over a week. In some of them almost two!

Re: Amaryllis
The blooms in Dec. /Jan last for up to 2 weeks, precisely the reason for my wish to get them bloom in Feb.

Re: Amaryllis
Brig Sb, Don't you think Amarayllis is enjoying popularity which it doesnt deserve in Pakistan ? So much care and money for a plant which blooms for a week only.? If we compare these to daylilies, The hybrid ones give around 60-90 days of flowering because of their reblooming habbit. Some are even better. No Doubt the flowers are beautiful but it's not rare either.

Re: Amaryllis
Does every one agree with Adnan.
That Daylilies bloom repeatedly and the blooming period is from 60-90 days.
I have little experience but feel that the same plant does not bloom repeatedly. different varieties may be blooming at different time, extending the blooming period. I have started growing them, will know by next year.
How good is it as a cut flower?
