Roots of dead coconut tree

Would love some advice regarding roots of a dead coconut tree.
The last of the coconut trees outside our house caught some pest/disease and was declared dead by my mali last week. He removed the tree today (only the bare trunk was left), but did not dig deep and remove the roots as requested, saying that roots will die out themselves and we need not do anything below ground.
I would like to re-use the kiyari to plant something new... Not a big tree maybe, but something on a smaller scale. I was under the impression that we might have to dig deep to remove the roots and replace the soil/sand for new plants.
What would you advise?
