Recommended plants for rooftop terrace
Respected members, I plan to make my homes rooftop green both for aesthetics as well as privacy purposes. I live in Islamabad hence the weather is harsher. I want palms in large clay pots but some suggest Schefflera in 3ft by 2ft cement planters along the parapet wall. I am confused. I kindly request your help which plants to get, which type pots to get and which season to plant them. Looking forward to your kind advice Pl. Thanks

You must consider only those plants which can take full sun of summers and chills of winter in Islamabad... I dont think palms can endure cold weather.. ficus could be better option..

If Bougainville does well in isl then there r few plants that bloom so frequently, and last so long, so easy to care for with infrequent waterings. U can buy the grafted multicolored landscaping type or plant single colored shrubs. Fast growing in summers and dormant in winters

Many thanks for a comprehensive response. Bougainvillea thrives well in Islamabad as I have them. However, I will check the other plants you mentioned for their all weather suitability in Islamabad. Will share pictures once I have something soon. Regards

Re: Recommended plants for rooftop terrace
I experienced only ficus did very well in both summers and winters....
* it is very slow growing in pots.
* if you want hedge then you need midium highted and bushy plants.
* you dont need to water every time specialy in summers they can survive summers easily. ( i have problem of water in our area).
Now i have 4 bougains but i have to care alot specialy about watering. i think because of their large root system they need water alot in pots. and they are messy, always shreding leaves and flowers.

Food for thought.
This size of a roof top you can have a beautiful garden with some shaded sitting area.
Complete sealing of the roof with overlapping plastic sheets.
$-6 inches of BHALL
Brick walled flower beds over the thick weight bearing walls filled with Bhall.
Small shrubs in large pots.
Vines over the side walls hanging down from beds.
The large grassy lawn will keep the rooms below quite cool.
Best of luck
Arif
Any comments by other members?

An abundant roof top garden of my neighbour has not been watered for years the grass has died but this Sumbal tree and mothers in law tongue are surviving.
