Hello all,

I'm a new member here and haven't got any prior experience with gardening / farming. We have some land in the Jatli area of Punjab, and I intend on starting tree farming there. For those who aren't aware of where Jatli exactly is, it's approximately 30 odd km from Chakwal, towards Gujjar Khan (viewable on Google Maps). I'm contemplating between either growing Poplar or Eucalyptus E. camaldulensis. My questions are as follows:

a) what are the names of these trees in urdu? I tried looking it up online but I got varied results - some pages refer to poplar as sufaida, and some refer to eucalyptus as sufaida?! Please can someone clarify - thanks!

b) are both the trees suitable to be grown in the Jatli area (semi-tropical, with no natural irrigation available). The primary source of water available will be rainwater.

c) what are the cost of saplings for these two trees? and,

d) I understand there are two types of eucalyptus. One is the e. camaldulnesis which grows straight and grows quite tall, and the other is the regular eucalyptus which grows in every direction. If I want to grow the E. Camaldulnesis, how would I differentiate between this and other types of the same genre, while buying saplings?

What is your land holding? is it presently under cultivation?
Why a forest?

Yes both grows very well as i have these in Potohar and doing well.
My friends in Hindko belt call poplar as Sufaida, however here in Punjab we call Eucalyptus as Sufaida.

I bought sufaida about 2 rupees per sapling, and poplar delta saplings 5 rupees/sapling

I intend on planting 1 tree per 1.5 sq metre, which turns out to be roughly 3,500 trees per acre.

I've got approximately 50 acres in Mirpur Sakro (Thatta district, Sindh) and approximately 30 acres in Jatli. Neither of the two holdings are presently under cultivation. Since Mirpur Sakro is waterlogged, I believe it is more suitable to growing eucalyptus. Is that a correct assumption on my part? Water in the Jatli area is between 150 - 300 feet under ground, with no irrigation. The primary source of water in the area is through rainfall.

I believe the the eucalyptus tree gives releases certain enzymes which is harmful to other plantations around. Is that correct? Also, if I grow a forest, is there any other plantation (or otherwise) which I can do, simultaneously, which would also be income generating?

Re why a forest - tbh, I live in Karachi and my business is here. I won't be able to devote all my time to agriculture, and since the eucalyptus is a fairly rugged plant, and doesn't require full time attention (of course I intend on hiring full time hari's on the land), I feel it will allow me to focus on my regular business while at the same time spend time on the farm periodically. Is that a correct assumption on my part? As in, am I on the right track, as far as farming is concerned?

And the reason why I chose the sufaida over other trees is because it's rotation cycle is fairly short (4 years, roughly), compared to other trees.

Considering the two locations mentioned, is there an alternative which you or other experienced members would suggest I consider? Please do let me know.

Any idea where I can get Eucalyptus hybrid (clone) saplings / seeds from, in Pakistan?
