Re: Confusion about Magnolias and Datura's
There are much better choices than magnolia i believe (Grapes are sour
)Many trees which are suitable for lahore and never tried before. I am so willing to put a thread of suitable trees but just cannot find time. The ones coming into my mind are following:
- Sophora secundiflora (shama) - The fragrance is just out of this world. You will forget hyacinths. Flowers are beautiful blue as well. Fabacea family.
- african tulip tree (spathodea campanulata) - Very beautiful flowers
- Some species of spirea. white flowers cover whole plant with no leaves visible.
- Some species of syringa. Just awesome.

Re: Confusion about Magnolias and Datura's
I am now growing Magnolia Champaca and Liliiflora and they seem to be thriving in this heat of June. When you guys say Magnolias are not suited to the Lahore climate, what exactly do you mean? I dont think it can get harsher than it is now in Lahore and the plants seem to be doing OK!

Re: Confusion about Magnolias and Datura's
Magnolia champaca, with yellow fragrant flowers, is also called michelia champaca. I will be surprised if it survives both summers and winters of lahore. Its cousin michelia figo (banana shrub) is also grown for fragrant flowers but i think it will also not grow here. Another variant is michelia alba, also fragrant flowers but difficult as well. They all grow very well in india's rainforest states. There are some trees in islamabad for sure, magnolia champaca.
If it really is Magnolia champaca and it grows fine at your's, i will follow you happily
Michelia figo seeds are available at chiltern and if i am correct this species comes true from seed, though slow growing.
By "not suitable" we mean that magnolia does not like the temperatures and humidity of lahore. Although a subtropical plant but they do not like very hot dry summers like continuous 45C. In winters they will need protection from cold as well but lahore winters are mild to kill these plants.
By the way, i love all these plants and i wish i could grow them in my garden.
