Soil pH | Tolerant, unlike ordinary Gardenia which requires acidic soil |

Other Details | This is a relatively rare gardenia for Pakistani gardens because it is not a native plant. Gardenias are quite "difficult" plants because they demand lot of care in terms of soil pH and fertilization. However, Tahitian gardenia is just the opposite. It is a very robust plant, and the fragrance is almost the same as normal gardenia- although not as intense as the regular gardenia. No specific pests or soil pH requirements! It is a must have plant for those interested in fragrant gardens. Available from Shalimar nurseries -Karachi. Photography: M Izhar |

The term "reasonable price" is very relative. For the filthy rich a Rs. 5000 plant is quite economical. If you are really fond of plants, then it is not too high either. Actually, Shalimar is quite expensive but they don't compromise on plant quality. For a common man, buying a Rs. 2000-3000 plant could be expensive (including myself). Most of the "foreign" plants like this Gardenia and Michelia, the prices can be quite high because the sellers charge import fee.
If you like local plants, then raat ki rani, marwa, motia, haar singhaar and mawlsari are almost matchless in terms of their fragrance. All nurseries should have them.

Gardenia should be around 600 to 800 for a good sized healthy plant
