| Other Details | It is an annual climbing plant, growing to a height of 1–2 meters (nearly six feet and six inches), where suitable support is available. The leaves are pinnate with two leaflets and a terminal tendril, which twines around supporting plants and structures helping the sweet pea to climb. The flowers are purple, 2-3.5 centimeters broad, in the wild plant, larger and very variable in color in the many cultivars.They are grown for their flower color (usually in pastel shades of blue, pink, purple and white, including bi-colors), and for their intense unique baby powder like fragrance.Choose a well-drained site. Alkaline soil is best; sprinkle some powdered lime on the surface if your soil tends to be acidic.
Sweet peas are happiest with their heads in the sun and their roots deep in cool, moist soil. When possible, plant low-growing annuals in front of them to shade their roots.plant sweet peas in the late fall so they can develop and bloom in late winter and early spring. Sown in August, they'll bloom in December.Except for the bush types, sweet peas are real climbers. Give them at least 6 feet of good support. Some varieties may climb to 9 or 15 feet. If you don't have a fence or trellis, provide support with dead tree branches/twigs or chicken wire.
When plants become established, mulch well to keep the soil cool and moist.
To encourage bushy growth, pinch off the tops when plants are 6 inches tall. |
