Re: Roses..... Sep 2013
Farhan bhai, it was a wonderful experience. Laikin digging ke baad aesa laga jase CHUK par gai hai. You know its been quite a few years that I dug a pit myself. Always had somebody easily available.
Here, you dream of a thing and you can get it. But its expensive and more importantly, one has to do everything himself. This includes complete preparation, plantation and of course cleaning of the area afterwards because there is no sweeper here. And its just not cleaning alone, after cleaning one has to put the waste in the right bag (recyclable, organic etc) and put it in the right colored waste bin outside the house where it will be collected on the given day. If you miss the timings, you keep your garbage with you for another week or launch a disposal operation dumping the waste in the central bin for which one has to take the garbage in his beautiful car. Aaah....kitna piyara hai Pakistan...hum is ki kadr nahi karte.
Regarding prices, garden soil was $2.29 per bag (25 kg), sheep manure was $2.69 per bag (16 kg) and cedar mulch was $6.5 a bag (25 kg). There is a variety of mulches available and some are quite cheap but I prefer pine bark mulch for roses due to its acidic pH. Roses were $22 a piece but as you would have noticed, these roses are three years old. Not like freshly grafted weak roses that we get in Pakistan. Hansa and all patio roses are own root, rest all other are grafted on Dr Hue.
Regds.

Rafique sb, thanks for your kind comments.
Munir sb, Thanks for the comments. Staying outside Pakistan for a very long time has never fascinated me. I will inshallah return by end of next year, probably.

@Farhan sb
Both are black in color and are quite similar. Just a different brand. The composition looks to be like a mixture of some soil, compost and other organic matters. Has good drainage.
Mustansir sb
Cedar is common name for a group of conifers (pine trees). In Urdu we call it Deodar or just Diar. Our own cedar is Cedrus deodara which is commonly found in Kashmir and G&B at heights over 7000 ft. Cedar mulch is basically pine bark.

@KBW what in the 'sheep manure'?
Is it 'treated' or simple farm yard manure?
