Disbudding

In one of the post, someone mentioned about removing buds of Ranunculus to increase the size of the plant and so the number of flowers.
I have my doubts; the first flower is the biggest, the disbudded plant in my opinion will have smaller flowers.
My experience is limited; what have you to say?
