Annuals are the show piece of the spring and in summer there is little to present, why plant anything at all, just leave the land to re-coop for the winter sowing.

What about growing Green Manure plants in that space so that when winter sowing comes up they will be hoed into the soil and act as organic fertilizer? Something like this http://www.chilternseeds.co.uk/list.php?type=manure

Very good idea

I think there is no harm in giving up active gardening in hot months (May-June-Jul).......Yes it can be done but the effort is mammoth and will require macro climate.
