There are so many hundreds and thousands of rose cultivars that sometimes, it becomes quite difficult to recognise a particular rose variety. Though there is lot of information availble on this forum regarding various rose varieties grown in Pakistan, it is found in numerous threads under different titles. The purpose of this thread is to collect various pics of roses from different threads and elsewhere and post them at one place. I understand that such a thread will not be very appealing for experts but for a novice like me, it will be a great help.

The other day I visited Changa Nursery in Pattoki. Apart from buying a few roses, I took pics of over 50 rose varieties planted in the nursery. I will post those pics here for the information of members along with some information (acquired from the net. I am hardly competent to comment on roses ). I would request the rose experts to give their views with regard to care / maintenance of these roses.

1. Since bloom size, shade and fragrance of a particular rose cultivar may differ from climate to climate, soil to soil and from season to season, the rose pic posted in this thread may not exactly look like the rose that you have or you have seen somewhere else. The pics shown in this thread should therefore be considered as general reference only.

2. All pics in this thread are of bushes growing in Pakistan. I will not post pics taken from the web, of the same cultivar, because they may look different owing to a different climate, soil type etc etc.

1 - Burgundy Iceberg



Common Name: Burgundy Iceburg
Type: Floribanda
Discoverd by: Edgar Norman Swane (1998), a sport of Brilliant Pink Iceberg
Description:
Deep purple with lighter reverse, dark burgundy red stamens and anthers. Average diameter 3.75". Full (26-40 petals), cluster-flowered, in small clusters, cupped-to-flat bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Pointed, ovoid buds.

Bushy, rounded. Semi-glossy foliage. 5 leaflets.
Height of 30" to 35" (75 to 90 cm). Width of 31" to 39" (80 to 100 cm).

2 - Marvelle




Common Name: Marvelle
Type: Hybrid Tea
Bred by: Samuel Darragh McGredy IV (1998).
Description:
Coral - orange, light yellow stripes, light yellow reverse. Moderate, fruity, sweet fragrance. 17 to 40 petals. Average diameter 4.75". Large, full (26-40 petals), borne mostly solitary, high-centered, reflexed bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.

Tall, upright, well-branched. Large, glossy, dark green, dense, leathery foliage.
Height of 3' to 4' (90 to 120 cm).

Lineage: seed: Louise Gardner
pollen: Auckland Metro × seedling of Stars 'n' Stripes

Marvel has performed fairly well in Okara heat. Not too many flowers but its bright orange and yellow has bee a good adition to flower garden.

3 - Helen Naude




Common Name: Helen Naude
Type: Hybrid Tea
Bred by: W. Kordes & Sons (Germany, 1996).
Description:
White, pink blending, pink edges. None / no fragrance. Average diameter 4.75". Very large, full (26-40 petals), borne mostly solitary, high-centered bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season. Pointed buds.
Medium, bushy. Large, matte, medium green foliage.
Height of 3' to 5' (90 to 150 cm). Width of up to 4' (up to 120 cm).

The most interesting thing I found out about Helen Naude is that no two blooms were abosolutely identical. Secondly, HMF database mentions either no scent or very little scent but the bloom in my home had a strong pleasant scent.

This rose is worth trying in hot climate of Pakistan.

4 - Maurice Utrillo



Common Name: Maurice Utrillo
Type: Hybrid Tea
Bred by: G. Delbard (France, 2004)
Description:
Red and white, yellow center, stripes. Moderate fragrance. Double (17-25 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.
Height of up to 32" (up to 80 cm). Width of 20" to 2' (50 to 60 cm).

5 - Saeeda Kareem





Common Name: Saeeda Kareem
Type: Hybrid Tea
Bred by: Changa Nurseries, Pattoki (2012)
Description:
Large size peach colour flowers. Moderate fragrance.

Lineage: Doris Tysterman x Queen Elizabeth

Saeeda Kareem performed outstandingly this summer. I think it was one of the least effected of all the roses. Though the flower size reduced but not like most other roses which had a drastic reduction in the size. A highly recommended rose.

6 - Oranges 'n' Lemons

Common Name: Oranges 'n' Lemons
Other Names: MACoranlem, Papagena (floribunda, McGredy, 1994)
Type: Floribunda, Hybrid Tea, Shrub
Bred by: Samuel Darragh McGredy IV (1994).
Description:
Orange and yellow, stripes. Mild fragrance. 40 petals. Average diameter 3.5". Full (26-40 petals), cluster-flowered, in small clusters bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.
Tall, spreading, thornless (or almost). Medium, dark green foliage.
Height of 30" to 10' (75 to 305 cm). Width of up to 2' (up to 60 cm).
USDA zone 7b and warmer. Can be used for cut flower or garden. Very vigorous. Disease susceptibility: very disease resistant. Spring Pruning: Remove old canes and dead or diseased wood and cut back canes that cross. In warmer climates, cut back the remaining canes by about one-third. In colder areas, you'll probably find you'll have to prune a little more than that. Requires spring freeze protection (see glossary - Spring freeze protection) .

Type: Hybrid Musk, Shrub
Bred by: Bentall (United Kingdom, 1937)
Description:
Pink, white center. Mild, musk fragrance. 5 petals. Average diameter 2". Small, single (4-8 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.
Height of 3' to 6' (90 to 185 cm). Width of 30" to 5' (75 to 150 cm).

KBW's Comments
Small single flowers which are mildly scented. At times, the scent is not detectable, specially in hot weather. Lots and lots of flowers all year round, even on the hottest day of the year. Shocking pink bloom contrasts beautifully with light green foliage. A very neat bush which despite small single flowers gives overall a very impressive look.

Description:
Yellow and red, stripes. Flowers deep red/brown with lemon yellow stripes. None to mild fragrance. Average diameter 2.75". Medium, double (17-25 petals) bloom form. Blooms in flushes throughout the season.
Medium, thornless (or almost). Matte, dark green foliage.
Height of up to 32" (up to 80 cm)

Lineage: sport of Hocus Pocus (florists rose, Kordes, 2000)
