I have been growing cherry tomatoes for about three years in containers and they have always given me bumper yields, the trick is to plant the veggies in fall season as the temperature is moderate and there is a little trouble of pests such as the most devastating spider mites, the plants will grow all winters here in the southern part of pakistan like punjab and will provide you with fresh harvests during the whole chill season, as the month of March- April sets in the plants will gradually become infested with pests and thats about the end of your vegetable garden. :)

Don't be dishearten, Tahir is right.. cooler season is good for many veges ..but you can grow them in summer too.. many chillies are easily grown throughout the summer, tomatoes need some shade in summer, okra (bhindi) will grow without any special care.. see the vegetable calender posted by Mir Afzal sb.
May be you didn't get the fresh seeds, to get the fresh seeds don't order from the seed shops (unless you want a specific variety not available in the market).. rather to go any sabzi wala near you house and pick the ripe vegges for example red chillies, old wrinkled pea pods, sprouting colocasia (arvi), sprouting potatoes, ripe rotten tomatoes etc etc these will give you best seeds and started plants with almost 100% germination..

Fresh seeds germinate within a week, get a ripe old shimla mirch from sabzi wala and place it in shade, it will become dry within two to three weeks, use the seeds..
