i was thinking the green felt they use for pinboards in schools could be used to make the pockets ....

Watering them could be a problem for a large vertical area, drip irrigation may solve this....

you have to set up a water drainage system to overcome this problem.

if you go through all the pages there are a few which explain how to make the drip irrigation and also how to collect water that falls so you can recycle it
